HI, DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHATS BEST TO SHOOT IN THIS OLD STEVENS 44 SHOT RIFLE? I ASSUME THE 44 EVERLAST SHELLS ARE LIKE ROCKING HORSE POOP, HARD TO FIND. THANKS, BRYAN.

What you are looking for would be the .44 Game Getter (.44 WCF shot loads). These typically bring $1 - $3 a round as a collectible and most you will find will be so bloody old they probably wouldn't fire anyway, unless BP. If you reload, pick up some .44 shot capsules (Speer used to make them, perhaps CCI does now?) & use mild loads in .44-40 brass.

Just to make sure I didn't mess you up, you won't be able to buy new *ammo* from anyone. I'm not sure who makes the shot capsules today (it's been a long time since I played w/ that particular material) but whatever you find, *you* will have to be the one to load it into the .44-40 brass.

Bryan, are you aware thatyour gun uses 44-40 ammunition only. It is different from 44 Special brass which is different from 44 Russian brass which is different from 44Magnum brass? All of these sizes are made today. When your gun was made, the 44-40 was also known as 44WCF,44Win.or 44W and either designation may be stamped on your barrel.Do not shoot any other 44 ammo in this gun.

v35, *thanks* for the addenda; sometimes I tend to forget that - possibly - some posters can make such erroneous assumptions. Brian, absolutely second v35's comment - .44-40 aka .44 W.C.F. brass ONLY - nothing else in .44 caliber or you will be in deep do-do. And do *NOT* use modern factory bulleted ammo of **any** kind, just MILD handloaded shot rounds. There were loads (Round ball & shot) made for this chambering; all are low grade collectibles & have been for 30+ years. No factory ammo for this design has been made since at least 1942. Thanks again, v35.
