Rem 222

I guess I need a history lesson. Why has the .222 Rem fallen into what appears to be "obsolete" status? Does performance suck? Does anyone still mfg rifles in this caliber? Did the .223 replace it? Just curious, thanks.....

    Local gun shop has a heavy barrel sako 222 for 500. They claim that 222 ammo is still available and they have several boxes? Guys is this true?

    The .222 was and is one of the finest rounds there has ever been. Just not as popular now due to large quantities of .223 being Military. Not sure of availability of current 222's. This was the cartridge of choice for the Benchrest crowd for quite a while. Every one that I have had has been extremely accurate and a joy to shoot. Super varmint caliber without all the noise. You will never regret buying one. Russ

    Remington still makes the 222 in the model 700 BDL. I think Sako and CZ make it also. I have one of the older ones in a Winchester model 70 and rjpeacock is right you will never regret buying one. Ammo is availabe from Remington and Hornady. I choose to reload my own though. Oh yea PMC makes ammo for it too.

    Thanks guys -- I guess my question should have been "Has it become obsolete?". I saw a Rem 788 in 222 that I was thinking about, but a friend told me he thought ammo was hard to come by, which is what prompted the question.

    darkstar11, I have the 788 in 222 and with a handload, I get .300" at 100yds, factory barrel and all. impressive for a pencil barrel, box gun.

    Darkstar11--I recently bought an old rem. 722 in 222 cal.Although i handload,there is no problem getting factory ammo.Also, the rem. 788 is usually extremely accurate in that cal.I say Go for it.

    Federal loads it in 2 varieties, of Classic, and Hornady has it in 2 varieties, PMC has it in 2 varieties, Remington has it in 3 varieties, Winchester has it in 2 varieties. I'd say its far from unavailable, and all but obsolete. Buy one with confidence. This info. is from my Northeast Shooter's Warehouse catalog, where I always go to find ANY ammo I'm looking for, if its in current production.     As I heard the story, the .222 had come out and quicky became quite popular. Then the military decided to go firepower as the goal for it's riflemen and wanted go to small round (smaller means you can carry alot more ammo). So they had trails ... the .222 was put in there and a new developement ...the .223. Unfortunetly the .223 won and as you probably know, any U.S. military cartridge does not go away. Since that time the .223 has always over shadowed the .222 (except is very specialized rolls ...ie Bench rest shooting)For what I do, the .223 is just fine AND I heard a .222 can be re-chambered for a .223 very easily! *G* Good Luck! ...Mark
