Hi EveryoneI am looking for a replacement rear sight for my 182 series Stainless Steel Mini-14.I want a rugged battle type sight with basic elevation and windage adjustments (such as a M-1 carbine style) not a delicate target sight. The original factory sight is made of aluminium and corrodes quite badly if used in adverse conditions and not fully disassemblied and cleaned regularly.I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.ThanksAus

Have you checked out Millet's Mini-14 sight? Also, awhile back, the suggestion was made on this forum that an M1 Carbine rear sight can be made to work on the Mini. I thought it a great idea until I plopped both down side by side on the workbench and realized that the Carbine sight fits into a dovetail, whereas the regular Mini uses ears integral with the receiver. This might, however, work on the Ranch Rifle.

Check out Brownells, they did list an Ashley sight for the Mini 14 rifles. www.brownells.com

You might try gunaccesories.com. They carry several adjustable rear sights for the Mini-14 and Mini-30.

Ausman: Some time ago I saw an advertisement posted on one of the boards from someone who was selling USGI M-1 Carbine sights for the standard Mini-14. I don't remember if the base of sights were modified to fit the Ruger receiver, or if there was an additional part between the receiver and the sight, thus adapting the original carbine sight to fit the Mini. I would love to see that ad again. The M-1 Carbine sight is, in my opinion, about perfect for the Mini-14. If anyone out there has information on how it can be installed, I'm sure a lot of readers would be very interested.

To Der Gebirgsjager: In my previous reply, I should have asked if you could/would machine the M-1 Carbine sight to fit the Mini-14, and what such work would cost. I have two, both machined, not casted, that I would like to have fitted to Mini-14s.

Seamus-I'll have to "study on it" some. As I indicated above, this can probably be done to a Ranch Rifle, because it is already fitted with a dovetailed rear sight and it's just a matter of making the male portion of the dovetail on the carbine sight compatable with the female part of the dovetail on the rifle. In the case of the standard Mini one might have to alter the top of the receiver extensively; or, as you suggested, make a part to fit between the receiver ears that would have a dovetail in it to accept the sight. Why don't you send your e-mail address to ccnorth@teleport.com and I'll get back to you after I get a chance to take a hard look at it.
