have not had much to do with shotguns, especially double barrels, but recently purchased a double barrel shotgun at a gun show and started to read up on them a little.i can not find anyplace where i can get agood explanation as to what a sidelock and a boxlock is. I'm the first to admit that i'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer and don't understand alot of the firearm terminology,, so make it simple pleasethanks

Why not take the lock off a cheap percussion or flint (like a cva)replica and examine it.that is a sidelock. a double would have another on the other side. then take apart another sidelock, without external hammers, like an lc smith, and examine that.advantage of the sidelocks--many best quality guns are furnished with a spare pair- if something breaks- mainspring-hammer-sear. etc it is relatively easy to replace.you cannot generally repair a boxlock around the campfire. boxlocks are also furnished with sideplates- for decoration.

Right you are Snowcountry. Field replacement of hammers, springs and triggers (and parts do break) can be impossible on some boxlocks.

Let me rephrase what capt saidSidelock has the mechanisem fastened to the outside of the weapon The Boxlock has the mechanisem completly housed in a box made up of the action and stockSide hammer muzzel loaders are a good example of the sidelock system, compair them to todays boxlock O/U shotguns like the Red-label and CetoriTo confuse the issue there were some boxlock guns made that had FALSE sideplates (known as false sidelocks)Sidelocks cost more to make due to the fitting / inletting costs.Clear as mud now ?
