Need a Colt 1911A1 Military expert

I have a chance to buy from an old man friend of mine a Colt U.S. Government marked 1911A1. It was his fathers gun during WW2 and he has the original G.I. leather holster and green G.I. web belt. I do not have the serial number but the gun is in about 95% condition and has a blued, not parkerized, finish. What is it worth?

    Most, if not all, military production was parkerized. The roll marks on the gun, inspectors initials and, most of all, the serial number would be needed to determine if military or not.

    A ballpark only figure is $675--but that is just an approx. There are so many small details that can make a big difference in the value that we really do need more info including the serial no. [This message has been edited by Der Gebirgsjager (edited 03-09-2002).]

    I wished I had thought to get the serial number but I didn't. It is marked "U.S. Government Property" on the slide and it is a Colt. I know it has not been tampered with in at least 30 years so I know it is all original and it IS blue finish.

    I don't doubt your word that it is blue, and the ones produced before, during, and after W.W.I were blued. The 1911 became the 1911-A1 in the early 1920s and they were still blued until the advent of parkerizing in W.W.II. That's why the serial no. is so important--to place the era of mfg. It may have started life as a 1911, been rebuilt, etc.; so any and all markings and numbers are important to determine a close value. The possibility also exists that it was parkerized and subsequently reblued by a civilian owner, so you will have to get another look at it.

    Thanks Der. I offered him $700 for it and if I get it and find out later it was worth more, good for me. It does have some history with it which makes it a little more valuable for me.

    Refinished 1911A1's generally sell in the $400-500 range.Buy the gun, not the story.Neal
