Will firing Russian 7.62x39mm (.311) harm a mini 30?

Nope it's designed to handle both the US and FSU ammo

Please explain that to my gunsmith friend's customer who brought his Mini-30 in for repair,to discover that the gun's bolt face was trashed and the barrel was worn almost to the point of being smooth, from firing several thousand .312" bullets through a .308" bore.

I'm remembering back to when they first brought them out, somthing to do with a modified throat design. Rugar isn't stupid enough to design and chamber a rifle to one spec when the most common ammo used is going to trash it (esp. when .311 bullets are the correct bullet dia in this cartridge). You think this rifle might have been used rapid fire with tracer ammo ? Thats real hard on barrels. There's more to this story than is being told. IMHO

I have 1000 rounds of Wolf bi-metal jacket(not copper). Will 1000 rds of bi-metal cause barrel wear?

For Rob670: I have a Ruger Mini-30 and had the same questions. This is what Ruger told me both over the phone and in writing. The mini-30 is designed for and fires the 7.62x39 bullet not the .308. However, they advised against shooting steel cased ammo as it is supposed to wear out the ejector. I have checked with several gun smiths who have said the same thing, to fire only brass ammo. Others say this is not true. I solved the problem by buying a Robinson Arms VEPR II, $500, that shoots all the 7.62xmm ammo you can load into it with no problems. But, call Ruger and talk with gunsmiths. I cannot guarantee you will get an unequivocal answer on this deal...

Rob 670What Notpars is refering to is the shell casing not the bullet, I suspect that the reason is the lubricity of steel vs brass in the chamber. Note that the warning is in regards to extractor wear not barrel damage.Personaly I wouldn't worry about hurting your gun with the Wolf ammo. And I agree with NP about contacting Ruger to get the definative word from them.

Thanks for all the response............!I sold the case of Wolf today (for a loss) at a gun show in Yuma to a AK owner. I was bummed that I was out about $20 because of ignorance. However I stopped and shot a few rounds of the copper jacketed stuff in the desert and forgot all about it. The best part ....I then stopped at a Casino on the way home and hit a slot for nearly enough to get a reloading kit.One thing I would like to share: Wolf 7.62x39 bi-metal jacket is in a black box. The copper jacket comes in a black and yellow box.
