I have my Grandfather's M-12, 12Ga, 3" Mag with a solid rib. All original, bluing about 40 per cent, yet mechaincally it is perfect. I'd like to use if for Waterfowl but steel shot is a requirement. It has been sitting in my safe un-used since his death in 1963. Should I leave it original or should I send it to Winchester and have them put in a choke system? Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom...mike

I would leave it alone, as choking, takes away the origanality, would depreciate it some.

If you insist on using it, do what I did. I bought one with two barrels, one had been cut for some reason, maybe a cutts comp., I don't know. I took the cut barrel to a smith and had screw-in chokes installed. It might be hard to find the 3in. mag though. But the barrels are out there. I hate having a gun that I can't use, I have some really nice guns that I inherited when my one grandfather died in 69, I still shoot them all.

    Thanks, Grizztribefans@sssnet.com

HEY,I MIGHT NOT UNDERSTAND BUT WHAT WOULD A CHOKE HAVE TO DO WITH IT OLDER GUNS STEEL WILL NOT HOLD UP TO STEEL SHOT SO YOU NEED TO SHOOT A SUBSTATUTE .I MUST NOT GET THE REASON,BUY BIZMUTH,OR OTHER BRAND I SHOOT IN MY BROWNING

Yes, shoot a substitute! Bismuth or Tungsten. American Rifleman does tests every year or two on the alternate ammo. Putting screw in chokes in an orig 3" M-12 ribbed barrel is a felony! Better to:

    1. Sell it to a collector (me..hehehehe)
    2. Obtain another barrel for modifying (chokes) and shooting.
    3. Shoot biz shot.

Biz and tung are more expensive, but better than losing all the collector value of the gun. If you decide on trying to find another barrel, let me know and I'll put you in touch with my bud in Seattle. He can find something at a reasonable price, if he doesn't already have one.
