Bedding is the way the action and barrel are secured to the stock. There are several types of bedding that you see in the mags. etc. The most basic is where the action is screwed to the stock. If aluminum tubes are used in the screw holes, it is called pilar bedding and basically reduces the amount of movement that can occur between the stock and action. Block bedding incorporates an aluminum "block" or bedding area within the stock for the action to screw to. Glass bedding uses a layer of acrylic gel with glass fiber to bed the action in the stock. All are intended to reduce or eliminate changes in the the amount of movement that can occur between the action and stock due to temps. or humididty which can affect accuracy.

Well bedding is when a guy takes a girl and... oh wait want to keep this G rated... bedding is the stuff worms live in...bedding is the quilt and sheets on my bed... and most importantly, it is, as described by the last post. It isn't hard to do but if you used an acrylic make sure you grease the barrel well or your stock and barrel will be forever mated!

Action screws should be tightened ...perhaps 45-60 inch-pounds.Wood will, over time, collapse under this pressure. The pillar or bedding compound will help to prevent this.Any movement between the action and stock will destroy accuracy. With a heavy recoiling rifle, the action will move backwards, splitting the stock at the wrist.
