Kevin: I don't have the savage but i believe that some states will not allow you to use it with smokeless powders,, I do have a T/C encore 209 x 50 cal and just love it great shooting gun and when you are done with the blackpowder season just 5 minutes and you can put a different barrel on it ,, I also had the Remington 700 BP it was ok but I found I like the T/C better,, see if you have a club aroung where you live that has some kind of BP shoot and go see what the guys are using ,, lot of guys will let you try out their rifles if you ask ,, if you do get into it try Cleanshot powder and also CVA Power Belt bullets, I've had good luck with both

Kevin, I have the 700rem and my hunting partner has the T/C encore. There is no difference other than price. I like them both, and they both are EXTREMELY accurate. The T/C has the feature of being able to switch to rifle and pistl barrels, which the REM does not. However, for group size, no difference. I can get 3 bullets to damn near touch at 100yds with the 700 rem. The Encore does the same. If you want to be able to switch barrels, by all means, get the T/C, but if all you want is an accurate muzzel loader, save the $$$ and buy the Rem 700. Be sure you buy stainless, and then get the 209 primer conversion from cabela's.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

My pick would be the Knight rifle....this was the first of the modern in-lines. Their product line has everything from the top of the line "Master Hunter" to the budget rifles for starters. I've taken about 15 deer with mine, great quality....

I own the Knight Wolverine in stainless steel, this the the cheaper version of their line of guns. I love it,shoots great. I have shot with buddies of mine who own the more expensive knights and my gun can hold its own in accuracy. The only difference being my gun is a little barrel heavy and is not balanced as well. I believe the new rifles may not have this problem, hope this helps.

JustC: here in my area the rem 700 is only about $20-30 cheaper than the Encore , you can still get the blued wood stock encore for under $500, is that about what they are in your area?

I have to agree with 4-wheeler. You can buy a Knight Wolverine (MK93) for the cheapest of all and how many times are you going to shoot it in a year! Mine has been shot 8 times in 2 years. 2 times just to check it out in 2000 and 2 dead deer the other 2 times. 2001 was a carbon copy of 2000. Why spend 550 dollars for a gun that won't be shot more than 4 times a year and 2 of those shots are unnessasary!! GHD

Another thing. Savage is going to get their * in a sling the first time some * puts 3031 or Varget or any of the myriad of smokeless powders in that gun and blows thier * to hell!!! GHD

gskyhawk, you can get a stainless rem 700 for $399 around here. I beleive the blued encore is just about $450 or so. But I wouldn't own a blued barrel BP gun. Just my preference, but stainless holds up much better to the pyrodex corrosiveness. Even though you clean it every time it is fired, I still prefer the stainless, in most evrything.
