Everyone likes the pre64s because of the claw extractor, but that dont mean much to the Book. In 98% condition the gun alone is worth $395.00. But on the market it may be worth more than that to someone.Hope this helps.

    Good Luck.

An acquaintance of mine recently paid $500 for one in .30-06 made in 1948, at the Roseburg, OR, Gun Show. He is not a collector, and intends to hunt with it. I believe that you'll find a spread on the value depending on what part of the country you live in. You don't indicate if you're buying or selling. If buying, Rugster's book price is a good buy. If selling, I'd go on the auction with a higher starting or reserve price.

Thanks. I bought the gun from an aquaintance. It looks like it is new from the factory, but based on the serial number, it is 1940 or so. the serial #26xxx places it somewhere there. I am just curious because it is in immaculate condition, and know it is worth around $1,500.00 just wanted additional opinions. Thanks

    coueshunter,
You have a pre-war there which will demand a premium, especially in the condition you say it is in. Pre-war mdl 70's are very desirable.

You didn't say what caliber it's in, and that will make a difference in the value.

Dave Riffle's has an add in the June 21st issue of the Gun List on pages 82-83. He has a pre-war in 30-06, 99% condition listed at $2495.00. That might be a little stiff, then again he might get it, or close to it. He has post wars at around 1195.00.

Just the pre-war actions are worth more than 500.00
It's a full two page add with about 90 Winchester model 70's advertised.

Most pre-war stuff in guns usually bring more money and are more desirable.

BullElk: thanks for the response, it is Jack's caliber, a .270 that has not be messed with. I am a Jack O'Connor fan, have most of his books and wanted a real old .270 mod 70, and stumbled on this one. I paid $1,250.00 for it, and am extremely happy. I cant believe the condition it is in. I have a hunt in Sonora, Mexico in december for Coues Whitetail, and I want to use this gun once to harvest one of the animals Jack O'Connor dearly loved to hunt and write about. Thanks for your reply, coueshunter......

You have a nice desirable rifle there, and the right caliber. You did get a good deal on it, now take damn good care of it.
I got just the thing to finish off the Jack O'Connor touch, A Lyman Alaskan 2 1/2 X with a post and crosshair in the 7/8" tube in excellent condition, and Redfield mounts.
