Remington 870 Question

I have a used Remington 870 WingMaster shotgun that I would like to install a synthetic stock and forearm on.

I don't know as much as I would like to about this shotgun, so I am kind of in the dark, as to how I would go about installing the stock / forearm.

Is this an easy enough of a procedure? Can anyone walk me through this?

Thanks in advance!!

The "ONLY" bad thing about owning "A GUN" is...not owning two or more!

I have a 870 Express that takes 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. Would I have a problem putting a 870 barrel on it chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells only provided I didn't use 3 inch shells? My current barrels aren't suitable for steel shot and I don't need the extra recoil from the longer shells.

Will a regular 870 barrel fit on the 870 Super Magnum receiver ?

I have a Remington 870 Express Super Mag, the one with the 3-1/2" chamber. I am looking to buy a cheap, used, spare smooth-bore barrel for it. I was wondering if 1.) barrels made for a regular 870, not specifically saying 870 EXPRESS, can fit this gun and 2.) can i buy a barrel with a 2-3/4 or 3" chamber and will it fit the gun, considering it was probably from a gun with that chamber size whereas mine is a 3-1/2"? Any info is appreciated.

Also, if anyone knows a good place to look for cheap, used 870 barrels please let me know.

    Newbie question:
    If I get a short barrel(Riot type)Remington 870,
can it be used also as a hunting shotgun?
Or do I need to also get a long barrel shotgun
to effectively hunt for game birds and such?

I have an 870 Express with the cheap plastic spring retainer with the dimples in the magazine tube. I was wondering if I could buy a tube off the old style using the screw cap with detents and change out the newer tube? I am look for instructions to do this if possible. I am also asking if anyone has a web site for the schematics for the Remington 870 blown apart with ID's for each part. I just would like to change this over before I get the whole gun parked to complete my Tactical Remington 870 12 gauge. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank You.

You might consider using some of the steel shot substitutes on the market now. They are legal to use as their shot is made of bismuth alloy, not lead. "Heavi-Shot", I believe is one of the names they are sold under. They are more expensive than steel shot, but still a lot cheaper than buying another 870 barrel.

From when the 870 Express was introduced, all the barrels were suitable for steel shot. The 870 Express was introduced in 1987, if I am not mistaken, and it has screw in Choke tubes. The regular barrel with the 2 3/4" chamber, will fit and function fine on your frame.

The Bismuth, is different than the "Heavy Shot". The Bismuth is just that, made out of Bismuth, and is only around 87% as dense as lead. It can be used in the conventional choke restrictions, normally assosciated with lead.

The "Heavy Shot", are mostly all denser than lead, and are all Tungsten based. Either Tungsten matrix, or Tungsten Polymer. This heavy shot, should not be used in the normal restrictions, used for lead shot. However, the choke restrictions, reserved for steel, can be used with the Tungsten based shot. Chokes for lead will work, but you should never use any choke for lead with a tighter than modified choke with steel or Tungsten.

Yes, that makes a difference. Any barrel that has the Rem-Choke system will be good to go for steel, or Heavi-Shot, with the appropriate choke tubes.

As noted, all Express barrels should be OK for steel shot. No need to change barrels to use 2 3/4".

It doesn't hurt to have a smoothbored barrel around unless you've got other shotguns for scattergun tasks.
A 2 3/4in SB as mentioned will work but I'd go w/the 3in mag should you ever want to go that way in the future, myself.

Gun shows will be sprouting soon unless you can afford to drop some pennies at your local dealer.
