The Ruger P89 will never fail. That thing eats any kind of ammo. I haven't shot any other 9mm besides it, so can't give you a good critique. I just know the Ruger is great.

I recommend the Sig. I own the P220 in .45 and shot the P226. Never had a problem with mine and you should not have a problem with the P226. Very well built and accurate. GD

....it was a classic 70 years ago, and still is one today..."Browning High Power"....how could anyone argue with a John Moses Browning design?

If you want the classic, begin a search for a 100% Belgium Browning Hi-Power. Do not settle for assembly in Portugal or US manufacture. If you find one in excellent condition, enjoy, and take good care of it. If you ever decide to get rid of you should make money on it, all that enjoyment was for free. My opinion.

I think that you should keep in mind the fact that police departments for the last 10 years have been trading in their 9mms for .40S&W's or .45's. If I only wanted to spend $300-350, I'd consider a 9mm; but, if I were about to spend $500-600, I'd get a .45, or maybe a .40. I just can't see spending all that money on a round that the police (correctly) think is marginal.Just my opinion; get what you want.Neal

I think there is a bit more to it though. If it is for home defense, nmeyers is right. If you are doing targets, go with a more expensive model.

First decide: Weight? with or without safety? capacity? barrel length/balance? night sights?, etc. Then decide who fits the bill.

My favorite full-size 9x19 pistol is the Steyr GB. It is the "softest" shooting service pistol I have ever shot. It is very accurate. It holds 18+1. I shoot mine better than any other service pistol I own, and I own most of them. I wish it had a safety instead of a decocker, but it is the rare gun that is perfect. With Triton, Gold Dot or Cor-Bon ammunition, I feel well-armed with 9x19 ammunition. (The hot 115-grain 9x19 loads are among the top street stoppers according to Sanow.) It the same gun were made in a larger caliber, I would buy one, but, since that will never happen, I remain happy with the GB.After the GB, I would put the Beretta M92 next because it does have a safety, and the SIG P226, which is a decocker only again, next.

I don't know much about the new Springfield but historically new models can be problematic. Your other choices are all excellent, but I would favor the Hi-Power, IMO.

What do you guys think of the CZ line of 9mm. The reason I am looking at a 9mm is the over abundance of ammo out there. I have a .45 that I keep for home defense but the rounds over a little expensive over time. As far as the 9mm is concerned in use, the military and police forces of the world have been using this round for decades. I agree that the 40SW is a very good round, just like the 10mm or 357Sig is a good round, but .45's and 9's have been used for a long time for good reasons.Pete

Sig P226. I love mine and it has never given me ANY problems. They are a bit pricey, though. If you want a gun just to have fun with and shoot, 9mm is definitely the way to go. If it will also double as a defensive piece, listen to what these guys are saying ad go with a .40 or .45.-Marcus

I am in total agreement with dano. The Sig 226 would be my choice if you want to spend the extra, but the beretta is a very accurate and easily maintained and dependable blah blah blah. Those two and the HK USP would have to be my favorites.

I really enjoy shooting my CZ75B. 4000+ rounds and never a problem. The most underrated pistol in my opinion. It has a better trigger than my old browning hp. It's just as accurate as my sigP220 and is half the price.
