OK,clean and brief as possible (ok, embellish a little):What firearms can fire BOTH the 5.56mm and the .223 Rem? and which are limited to the .223 only?Thanks,Carlp.s. I am strongly considering a Savage in .223, and don't want to spend alot of time worrying about my ammo. besides, some NATO surplus is cheap right now.-Carl

Short & dirty: HUH? Embellishment 1: dimensionally, these are the same, just different names for the same cartridge, think .308 Winchester & 7.62x51 NATO. Regardless of the verbiage, the chambering and the ammo are interchangeable.Embellishment 2: If you are talking fine accuracy, there may be rifling twist differences, action variables or other factors in which the bullet weight, standard velocity or other factors could play a roll and I'm not qualified to advise in that respect.

The throats of 5.56 are about 0.025 longer to handle the M856 tracer round. For practical purposes there is no difference.cpermd
