What is the difference if any between Black Talon SXT and the "original" stuff? Also, what states are they banned entirely in?

I don't think they are banned in any state. They were voluntarily taken off the market.Teflon bullets (cop killers) are probably banned in all states.

Some say it's just the box they come in. Some say there is a real difference. I have both and they seem to shoot the same. I wouldn't want to be hit with either.

With the price some people will pay for the original, I don't plan to shoot the two boxes of .44 mag that are in the ammo box.

Why are black tallons called cop killers? If i shoot a cop with the cheap 9mm ammo from wal-mart i could kill him to? Black tallons don't have a steel core so what makes them so bad. Remington makes a Golden saber bullet and federal high shock is also a nasty bullet. The last few times i was hiking i carried a DE .357 mag. with Hornady Custom 158 grain JHP ammo. That was powerful ammo. While i was hiking we were walking along a road and a lady in a SUV hit a deer. I shot the deer because it was hurt pretty bad. The bullet had an exit wound the size of my fist and it just rip the deer apart. What i am trying to say is why are just some bullets called cop killers? ANY bullet can kill even a 22 short? Black talons were never called "cop killers"

As Rugerniner said the teflon or steel core are considered "cop killers" because they will penetrate a bullet-proof vest. Saw a demo of a 357mag lead and teflon bullet. The vest stopped the lead bullet. The teflon penetrated both sides of the vest and 7 L.A. phone books behind it. The uproar over the Talon was caused because the jacket expands into triangular cutting edges that were perceived by the public to cause "terrible" wounds. I'm happy they concentrated on this round and left the real killers on the market. It was really no more than a gimmick.

When Winchester sold them to the public, they sold them under the name Black Talon. When they pulled them off the civilian market and started selling them to law enforcement only, the were renamed Ranger SXT. They are still identical. The current Winchester SXT is similair to the Black Talon / Ranger SXT, except they dont have the moly-coat or the "talons".[This message has been edited by BigTex (edited 03-15-2002).]

I just talked to a dealer. What he said about the difference was just that one is black civilian ammo, the other is gold colored LE ammo. They are so dangerous because they are controlled expansion, meaning they don't just mushroom or fragment randomly as with many hollow points. Here is a auction that shows a picture os a fired one: http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=3306067
