identifying USGI mags for M1A?

Going to a gunshow next weekend and if I don't find anything interesting I might try to pick up a mag or two for my M1A. From previous posts USGI mags are the best, but how do I identify one? Is that stamped on it or is there some other designation? Thanks.GL

    You might be better off ordering from a reputable online source rather than buying at a gunshow. The thing is, most GI mags have no markings at all, but you can definitely spot them for their high-quality parkerized finish and solid construction. A lot of aftermarket mags are cheap looking and the finish is not quite right. Good luck.

    Green Lantern....I have purchased brand new in the wrapping paper government M-14 magazines from Johnson's Sporting Goods in Adrian Michigan for $50 apiece. Yeah I know you are not stealing them for that price...but opening up the sealed paper on a magazine that was made in 1963 or 1964 is reassuring in that you know you are not buying a magazine that didn't work in someone else's rifle. I have purchased weapons, ammo and magazines from Johnson's. They advertise in "The Gun List" and have my highest recommendation. Last time I checked they still had about 17 or 18 mags still in sealed government paper. If you want their phone number let me know. Beach

    All USGI M-14 mag's do have a Mfg mark on them, it is located near the bottom on the back side of the mag. It may be faint, but if it is orginal it is there.

    You'll get skinned via the price of M1A mags from a dealer or at a gun show. Check out Cole Distributing on the net.

    With all due respect to AMMO GUY and DANO, I have about two dozen M-14 Mags purchased at Camp Perry a few years ago. About one out of four has no manufacturer's marking. I would suggest that you carefully examine a known GI mag, especially as to the spot welded lip, and base your evaluation on that.If you need a few, let me know. (mkood@prodigy.net)
