    The prefix on Rugers indicates the model, not the year made.Neal

    This is a good site for serial numbers on Mini-14s and info, but they stop at 1993. http://mini14world.com/

    While the prefix sometimes relates to a model variation, it is also used to keep the serial numbers going when they reach 99,999, for example, the rifle following 195-99999 might be 196-00001 (196-00000?). However, when the 180-series became the 181-series, there were significant changes in the rifle. I think a new series is started for finish variations as well. For instance, when the stainless rifles came out, I think a new series prefix was started apart from the prefix being used on the blue rifles.
