Have been offered a NO 4 MK1/2 "jungle carbine" but can't find much info on it. It is marked U.S.PROPERTY on top left of breech, JK in a circle on top of breech, SSN is 62C(?)3392. I see no other external marks. The flash suppressor, bayonet lug front sight are of one piece, barrel is appx 22 in and is 303 cal. The butt plate is metal and rubber with sling lug on right side. What exactly is this thing and what is the going price? Thanks, Tomps The finish actually appears to be paint.

This jungle carbine that you are discribing is a fake. The US property stamping was only put on Savage made #4 rifels made in the US and loaned to the British. All Jungle carbines were made in England. And were marked NO5.The NO4 1/2 on this rifel dose mean that the triger was modifid to the NO4 MK2 specs. It is a shame that this rifel has been butcherd. You can buy these imatation jungle carbines for around $190.00 from several companies. However you can buy an origanal NO5 jungle carbine for around $225.00 right now. My local gun shop just got 2 in last week. And I have seen them on auction also. Good luck Hope this helps you out. It was originally a No4 MK1 built by Savage in the US during the lend lease period of WW2. Built from '42-'44 about 1,000,000 rifles were built. In '49 these were reconfigured in England with modifications to the trigger and termed MK1/2. Value is probably as a shooter, no more than $130. The paint is what was called Sunordite and was a cheap way to protect them without refinishing. [This message has been edited by oneshy (edited 03-18-2002).]

Thanks guys, that is what I was afraid of. I think my buddy was taken in and he is offering it to me for $100 with an extra clip and 2 boxes of Winchester (40 rds) ammo. He never shot it. It does look like it will be a fun shooter and I guess it is worth that. Tom

Thanks fellows, I was afraid of that. My buddy was taken in but he will sell to me for 100 bucks with extra clip and 40 rds of Winchester soft point. It looks like it will be a fun shooter so I can't go wrong. Tom
