Need help identifying a shotgun and a problem with it

I was just given an old 12 gauge shotgun and have a couple questions about it that I hope someone out there can answer for me. First of all, I'm not even sure what brand it is. The barrel is stamped "Browning Patent" and the receiver has "Western Field" inscribed on it. Is Western Field the brand or just a model of Browning?Secondly, the shells will not stay in the magazine tube. After I put the shells in the magazine, the spring-loaded follower pushes them right back out into the loading port. Any idea on what is broken or might be causing this?

Western Field was a house brand. I don't remember who sold it, may have Wards, but it was built for them to sell under their store "brand name" by one of the manufacturers. Western fields were built by a lot of different manufacturers. Would need to know the model number to tell you who built it.

They were made by Mossberg for Montgomery Wards.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately there is no model # stamped on the gun.

Are there ANY other markings on it? Western field was a house name mainly for Wards. There were guns made under that brand by Mossberg, Savage, Stevens, Kessler, MarlinNoble, Remington and Savage-Fox. The majority were by Mossberg.

The only markings on the gun are "Browning Patent" and "12 GA Proof Tested" on the barrel, and "Western Field" stamped on the receiver. There is also a picture of a hunting dog standing in grass inscribed on the receiver next to "Western Field". Also, if it helps, the serial number stamped on the bottom of the gun behind the trigger guard ends in a "B" (for example: 37549B).

Is this an auto, pump or what?

Sounds as though you have an older one mfg. by Stevens either a Westernfield model 30 or 35 , Sears Ranger, or Stevens model 520 if the receiver has the profile of a BAR. They are a $100 shotgun in good condition and shoot well if had been maintained and not abused. Easy to get parts from Numrich to solve your problem.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.[This message has been edited by gunpaq (edited 03-19-2002).]

    It's a pump.

I have the exact same gun. Nice shooter other than the pounding you get. Mine has a 28"? full choke barrel.gunpaq, so the ones with the hump back receiver were made by Stevens?I take it that due to the $100 value, a reblue job wouldn't hurt the "value" too much?
