What were the year or years that Remington had a recall on their model 700 rifles and what was the reason for the recall? Any info is appreciated.

I haven't heard about it, but it may be in regards to the old safties.

This refers to the series of 700's that required you to take off the safe to open the bolt. Remington will change the safety so that the bolt can be opened without taking it off safe.

I don't think it is a recall per say. They call it a safety modification program. Any Remington 700 made before 1982 is included. The thing they are concerned with is, the safety has to be off before a live shell can be extracted. If you want your bolt modified so a live shell can be extracted with the safety on, you will have to pay $20 plus shipping. The upside being you will get a $20 coupon towards the purchase of various Remington products. Such as gun locks, hearing protection, eye protection, gun safes. I read about this in a hunting magazine and assume it to be correct. You can call 1-800-243-9700 for more info.

[edit by CaptFun] the posted phone # was a private residence. We have updated the thread to the proper 800# for Remington. [/edit]

knifeuser has it correct. The gun owner has to pay for shipping plus $20. Doesn't sound all that good to me.

Isn't there an easy modification to make the change so that you can open the bolt without taking the safety off?

farmplinker...you can make the modification very easily. Remove the
bolt from your 700. Look into the rear, right side of the action, and work the safe. You will see the top part of the safety lever
protrude through the action. This part that protrudes through engages
a small slot type indentation in the bottom the bolt. Take the gun out of the action, remove the safety, and grind off a slight amount.
This will prevent engagement of the bolt and then you can open the
bolt with safe in the on position.

About 5 years ago I took an old Rem. 700 to a gunsmith to have
a new barrel put on. He asked if I wanted the safety changed out, so
I wouldn't have to put the safety off to open the bolt. I said sure.
He said Remington was giving him $12.00 for each one he changed. Now
they want you to ship the rifle to them for modification, plus the
$20.00. I think I will keep mine the way it is, or modify it myself.

Don't send flowers when I die. Send money now, I can buy more ammo.

I prefer to leave my 700's as they are. All you have to do is pratice safety when you're unloading the rifle, especially if you have a blind magazine, and not the hinged floorplate.
When you have the conversion done, you will have to constantly check the bolt to make sure it is closed while you're hunting, especially in thick timber.
I have a later model 700 mountain rifle that has the latest safety in it, and found it open a couple of times while hunting. It could be from catching on to a branch, your pocket or some other reason, but it happens.
My advise is to leave it be and stay safe.
Another point, when unloading and you don't have the hinged floorplate, all you have to do is shove the cartridge ahead without fully chambering it, tip the rifle a little and it will fall out of the port. Do that with each shell until empty.
