U.S.N. chamber insert for M1

Where can I get a chamber collet for the M1 Garand that reduces the chamber from 03 ball to 7.62x51 NATO. I saw one at a gun show years ago and was told that the Navy made them for their Marksmanship team's M1s so they could shoot 7.62x51 match ammo after they ran out of the 03 ball match. I was told the Navy team did not adopt the M14 until much latter. But available 30-06 match ammo ran outin the 50s. No more was made since only the Navy team was still using the M1s that used it. I have an M1 and surplus 308 ammo is 2/3ds to half the price of surplus 30-06 or 03 ball. The unit that I saw was just a connicle split ring designed to fit against the shoulder of the chamber and had a handle for insertion and extraction.

If you can get hold of a Shotgun News, the adaptors are advertised in there. I don't think you will get satisfactory accuracy with the adaptor. The freebore jump will cut accuracy potential way down.

To the best of my recollection, the chamber insert was an experiment by the Navy to explore the feasibility of converting the M1 to 7.62X51. I was in ordnance at the time and as I recall it was not very successful. The object,of course, was to get away from the cost of rebarreling those thousands of M1's in Navy service. Iam writeing this from memory,so may be mistaken, but I don't remember the rifle team ever useing the insert in their rifles. Lake City and Remington Palma Match .30-06 was issued long after 1950,I know that for a fact. If you decide to go this route, remember that you must add a filler block in the magazine to make up for the shorter cartridge and I think that this was part of the problem that the Navy had. In any case, best of luck with your project. Scout

One other problem I've heard with these inserts, you'll have a hell of a time getting them back out! You might check here, I think I recall someone talking about that very problem. Good Luck! ...Mark

The insert was designed to go in, and stay in. It could be removed, with dificulty, using a broken case extractor tool. The filler block is needed to keep some dummy from loading a clip of 30-06 ammo into a 308 rifle.

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
