scope mount for AK

I was looking for some info on a good scope mount for an Egyptian Maadi. I don't want the type the replaces the receiver cover, as I've been told they won't hold zero very well and are pretty flimsy. I want to avoid using the B-Square type mount because to clean the gun, I would need to remove it and it will become quite a pain in the long run.

I was looking for some info on the side mounts. I found one in a catalog that requires that three holes be drilled into the side of the receiver. Can these holes be covered later if needed, or incase I just want to remove the scope for whatever reason? Will it harm the gun in anyway if the holes are left unplugged?

Also, what is a good spot to look at a few different options for scope mounts for this type of gun?

Any info is appreciated, thanks.

Alex

I AGREE WITH YOU, THE B-SQUARE & UPPER COVER MOUNTS ARE NOT WORTH A FLIP. THE BEST I HAVE USED ARE THE SIDEMOUNTS AS USED ON THE SAR SERIES OF AK'S. YES YOU HAVE TO RIVIT THE SAR TYPE MOUNT TO THE RECIVER, AND THE MOUNT IS NOT REMOVEABLE!. I THINK, BUT MAYBE WRONG, THAT 1 HOLE HAS TO BE ADDED & YOU CAN USE 1 EXISTING RIVIT HOLE.
BUT THEY KEEP THEIR ZERO WITHIN APX. +- 1/2DEGREE. I SWAP SCOPE'S BETWEEN 4 DIFFERENT GUNS, AND IAM HAPPY WITH THE SAR TYPE MOUNTS.
I THINK KAVAR.COM HAS THE VARIOUS SCOPE MOUNTS YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.

Thanks a bunch. I've seen some really wicked looking AK's on a different board, with all types of mounts and other accessories, but never found a place where I could buy them. I'll take a look at them. Thanks again.

    Have u consider the ultimak??

The only thing that u have to remove on your ak its the upper side of the forend. I have hear a lot of positive reviews on it and i was considering buying 2, 1 for my mak-90 and 1 for my arsenal bulgarian milled reciever.

think about it or find out on the discussion board on ak-47.net
    Good luck!

I feel naked no beign with my gun by my side how about u?

That ultimak looks very interesting. I wonder what it would feel like to put a regular scope on that, using that mount. Seems like the scope would be mounted a bit far towards the muzzle though. Anyone have any experience with these things?

I put the ultimak on a Hungarian AKM underfolder. The ultimak will require some internal relief on the bottom half of the foregrip on some AK models....this is necessary for clearance of the two "U" clamp components. If you don't want to alter the original stock, buy an aftermarket foregrip like I did. Be sure that the ultimak doesn't bind anywhere on the gas tube..or when things heat up, the POI will start to drift.Check out their website or call the 800 number. The people are very helpful and knowledgable.
Any optic that you mount on the ultimak will be in a forward "scout" position. You will need to use something with plenty of eye relief...in my opinion, ultimaks are ideal for reddots. I would forget about conventional scopes.
Bottom line is that this is a quality product, and if you change your mind, you can return the rifle to original condition and not have the problem of holes in your receiver.
