7.62 Russian hunting ammo

Are any domestic cartridge companies producing hunting ammo in 7.62 russian ? In Pa. we can't hunt with fmj.I'm still considering rechambering my M-44 to .30 WSM . But for now I'll try the russian caliber.Norma has it for 40 bucks a box,way too pricey.Can anyone give me the bullet diameters for .30 WSM & 7.62 Russian?

    Pull the FMJ and seat a .308 hunting style bullet of the same weight.
    The 7.62x54R is normaly loaded with .308 dia bullets, but wartime barrels were often made oversize, so accurcy may suffer.
    As far as converting to the 30 WSM goes, it will be cheaper to buy a new M-70 rifle, than to go thru the greef of making the changeover. Consider that the M-44 has to short of a barrel for the WSM, the chamber swell is probably to short (between those 2 items you need a new barrel), mounting the optics with that split bridge receiver, welding on a new bolt handle (or were you thinking of a P.O.S. screw on job), trigger work, new stock, re-engineering the magazene to feed the new case, etc, plus the labor bill from your 'smith and your well over 6 bills and probably closer to a grand (plus the scope).
    Than theres still the question, is the receiver is strong enough?
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Wolf ammo makes it. Steel case, Berdan primed, 200 Gr. SP. 500 round case wholesales for over $105.00 per case. plus freight.

    Tailgunner, IMO, that is not good advice, sorry to disagree with you, but I've done that, and I split a case upon firing it. If anyone knows how to do what you suggested safely, thats good, but for the average reloader, even advanced reloader, why do that when you can just get the components required to do it safely? There is plenty of ammo out there for shooting, made by both Winchester and S&B, as well as the Wolfe ammo., but reportedly S&B makes the Winchester ammo for them, so just get the S&B. Follow the link below for one alternative for an ammo source for your gun. Oh yes, S&B is a very good brand of ammo, I use it when I'm just shooting to get a gun on paper, instead of wasting time and money with reloading my Barnes bullets, and its also a good source of brass for reloading when you're done, its good brass. Very accurate also, do not be afraid to order it. I've used it in my 9mm Makarov, 7x57 Mauser, 6.5x55 Swede, 30-06, and 7.62x54R, good accuracy and performance is what you get in this brand of ammo.

    No problem Sarg, I've never had that problem and hadn't considered it. Personaly I use the (boxer primed) FMJ's for practice and reload them for hunting.
    I'm at that advanced age where I can remember when (berdan primed) Mil-Surp was the only alternative to Norma. (and yes, I remember when 7.62x39 was somthing you had to make your own brass for)
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    Previous ammo advice is correct, S&B is good . You don't want to consider the conversion to .30Wsm. I don't think any gunsmith would do it anyway.

    Winchester or USA ammo is making the ammo with a brass reloadible case with a hollow point bullet.US repeating arms or Winchester are also making the model 70 to chamber the cartridge.As it has become popular among whitetail Deer hunters.

    There is Russian ammo out there for the 7.62x54R. A hunting round 203gr Soft Point Boat Tail. SOG, Century Arms, FAC, and a few others have this ammo. I normally go through SOG and pick up a thousand rounds at a time. I have sold quite a few of these rifles M-44. What a lot of hunters around here like is something cheap they can drag around in the brush and not worry about sratching up.
