Mossberg 500 vs. 590

Is the Mossberg 590 a quality firearm. I've seen Mossberg 500's and 590's but I've never shot one nor have I handled one. Are they cheap junk and what are the specific differences between the two models? I am considering a 590 purchase but am not sure if it is the right way to go.

I have a suped up Mossberg 500 persuader with an 8rd tube Mag,heat shield and cylinder bore choke. I love it,I have the 590DA as well and have found it to be of good quality.I also have the REM870 and our Dept has just issued the Scatter Gun Technology Shotguns made by Wilson Combat.I would just assume carry my Mossberg as any of them, and I know at 25yrds my Mossberg 500 will put as many 00 buck pellots in a life size target as any of the above mentioned guns.

    Hope this Helps.

I also have a 500 Persuader and looked at the 590 as well before I bought. The 590 has a heat shield, bayonet lug and a higher capacity tube (1 more round I believe). My 500 has a 7 round tube. The 500 is a good quality gun and I would defiantely recommend it. The only thing is, you have to work the action a LOT to break it in. It's very stiff in comparison with an 870. I've heard it takes about 200 rounds to break them in.

When I was a dealer, I sold hundreds of Mossberg 500 shotguns (as well as Remingtons and Winchesters). Never had one dissatisfied customer. I gave one to my son 15 years ago--he loves it. For a basic defence shotgun, Mossberg is as good as there is.

Just got a 590A1 for Fathers Day, Parkerized, no heat shield, 6 shot capacity, NIB at Mesa Gunshow for $289. Don't know if that's a deal or not but I thought it was a fair price. Went out to shoot and it is a nice shooter, the slide is a little stiff but not that bad. I looked at Mossberg and Remington, seemed like a toss up so got the Mossberg and not disappointed..............

I just bought a Mossberg 590-A-1, with the parkerized finish, 8 rd tube, ghost ring rear sight, red ramp front sight and speed feed stock. I took it out and tested it and am very happy with it. I would highly recommend it.

Took my wife out this morning to shoot the new 590A1. She really had a good time and now if I'm ever attacked by a herd of one gallon milk jugs filled with colored water I know who to call for protection :)
