the ultra mag is in the neighborhood of a couple of hundred FPS faster than the short mag. Energy is considerably higher as well.

JustC, I think the question was the difference in Remington's SHORT ACTION ULTRA MAG and the WIN WSM. Were you referring to the Remington 300 Ultra Mag? The difference in the 2 short cartridges acording to the info from Remington and Win is only 10fps. GHD

These two rounds are essentially the same. The belief is that the WSM is likely to be a survivor in the short mag. game - they're winning the PR battle and there are a guns other than Winchester being chambered for it. The SAUM came along a bit later and might not be around in 5 years...

ooops, I was under the impression that if Remington named it a Short Action "ultra Mag" that it was an ultra mag performer in a short fat case. Doesn't make any sense to call it SAUM and only have it perform to win mag specs. After all, that is what the winchester short mag does. I have to wonder about the logic on that one. Should have checked my balistics tables first.

The WSM has a slightly larger case capasity than the RUSM, I believe it has a 6 grain advantage. Currently, remington only offers the RUSM with a 22" barrel while winchester offers a 24", again giving winchester a slight velocity advantage. There are two reasons why the two appear to have similar ballistics. One, the Remington factory loads feature bullets with better ballistic coefficients (Win=Fail Safe, Rem=Nosler Partitions) than winchester and two, remington publishes the velocities of the RUSM with a 24" barrel, even though they don't offer a 24" barrel.

Either one of those short fat cases will probably deliver good accuracy. I have only shot the Win version and it was to sight in one for a guy a couple of weeks ago. I didn't set the choronograph up (probably should have)but was impressed with 100 and 200 yard accuracy. It was a Browning in 300WSM with a "quiet brake" on it not the BOSS brake. There is no such thing as a quiet brake!!!!! The rifle was very pleasant with recoil probably in the 243 range. Whenever one of those companys goes ahead and necks it down to .264 or .257 they will have a screaming demon!!! My opinion is the 257 version will be a varmints worst nightmare!!!! GHD

I hunted with the wsm last year and was pleased with the results. I would reccomend staying away from the remington because it is a small lightweight rifle. My browning a-bolt kicked like a pissed off mule. Would hate to have to try to hold on to that little model 7 with that kind of recoil. Accuracy was m.o.a. or less depending on the load I shot. The 180 grouped the best from my gun with the best group printing at .684" @ 100yds. I would go with the wsm in a win. model 70. Leave the a-bolt alone. They are JUNK. I am replacing mine with the model 70 coyote.

Its only a matter of opinion, but the .300 WSM gets my vote.If you are a reloader it seems to me its also easier to work with.

    Good Luck.
