Question on operation of Smith model 39

A friend has a model 39 Smith & Wesson that he took apart and now I get to fix - unless we have another volunteer. No?
The malfunction is, when hammer is back and safety is applied the hammer drops. It appears the safety bar blocks the hammer, so without putting a primed case through it I am speculating. I would appreciate knowing if the hammer is indeed supposed to drop or stay back when the safety is applied -
If indeed the hammer is suppose to stay back, does anyone have a parts diagram for the pistol?
Thanks guys! (I think! lol)

The lever is called (by most people) a "hammer drop." It's common on most S&W pistols and its function is to safely let the hammer down without a discharge. Leaving the lever down also disables the gun so you could say it's a "safety" too.

Go to http://www.smith-wesson.com/helpdesk/index.html and get a manual.

That's the way these are supposed to work. The loading instructions in the manual for my S&W 39 says to put the safety on, put in a magazine, rack the slide and let the hammer drop on it's own. To shoot: take off the safety, first shot is DA and SA for the rest unless you use the safety/hammer dropper to go back to DA. Seemed goofy to me at first being used to SA auto loaders but makes sense after some use. Not an expert here, just relaying what it says on the paperwork that came with my 39.
