As I understand it, silencers are very hard to get legally. Apparently, there's some kind of liscence or permit you need. Then there's the obvious suspicion of why you need/have one. As far as the gun goes, I'm not even sure which ones can be fitted with one. However, the smallest ones I know of are derringers, NAA minis(.22 and .17 cals only), and kel-tech(9mm, .32, .380). All of which are very inexspenive to buy.[;)]

They are legal is some/most states. You have to pay a $200 "stamp tax" to the Gov't. It is a regulatory fee, more than a tax, making it illegal, but it is the Gov't, right?

Silencers used to be commonly available, as I understand it, for a few dollars at the hardware store. You have one on your car, lawnmower, etc, right? If they were easy to get, I might not have hearing damage.

The smallest gun? A .22LR, probably.

One of the smallest would be a Beretta Bobcat(I think that is the name) in 22 LR with an SRT Odessa can. Check srtarms.com for more info.

I believe that Mooseyard is referring to the Beretta Model 21A. At one time I used to see the Beretta 851 (Minx) in .22 short with a suppressor, but I believe you needed to replace the barrel with a longer, threaded one.

It is possible to build suppressors that are integral to the gun, so that they either are, or appear to be part of the barrel to cut down on the overall length, but even with those you still need a certain amount of length for them to work properly.

This is the gun and silencer in question (bottom) from the SRT website. As you can see, the overall package is about the same overall size as the Ruger above it [edit **I mean the Ruger *WITHOUT* the obviously attached silencer! (see comments below)]. Some people like the Walther p22 silenced, so that could be an option too for a relatively small quiet gun.

If that Ruger is "unsilenced; why is the front sight so far back from the muzzle, and why does the barrel appear to swell just past that seam?
Iver Johnson TP-22 is the smallest I've seen firsthand, but would a zip gun with a 2-liter pop bottle taped to its' barrel count?

Gunnut, you are right, the Ruger is silenced. I think what Beantown was pointing out is that the Beretta w/can is about the size of the ruger not including the can. I don't think he meant to imply that the Ruger was unsupressed.

Did you know that in some Euorpean countries it is illegal to go shooting without a silencer? You are fined quite extensively. Anyway, I have seen the Ruger with an integral silencer around the whole barrell. It just looked like the bull barrell model. Pretty slick.
