just bought a used pardner handi rifle in .223 for my son. I knew the rifle had this problem. It will eject remington brass but will not eject other brass like winchester. Has anyone else had this problem? WOuld a stronger ejector spring solve the problem? I have tried polishing the chamber and there is some tool marks in the chamber wall but I can not say that is causing the issue or not.

I sold a couple that had this problem. The only solution I found was 4" of brass rod that would drop down the barrel from the muzzle. That was all it took to initiate case ejection. The one I have now only does this with M193 5.56 ammo so I just don't shoot that in it anymore.

Do some browser searching. If your is a ejector type, (pusher) some guys are converting them to extractors (pullers) for better reliability.

Seems H&R makes them barrels both ways. May want to try trading barrels with H&R or ???. I think Numerich arms sells some conversion items to go to extraction type. The extractor type just partically lifts the hull and you have to complete removing via hand.

It's a common issue. There isn't much room for a stronger sprig. Nickel plated brass helps. For my buddy's H&R .280 I drilled into the forearm and installed a short section of the female end of a broken section rod, then I kernelled a longer male section of rod to screw into the glued in section. This way he always had the knock out rod with the rifle.

Easy to solve this problem. Costs about $250 - $350. Trade the NEF "Not So Handy Rifle" for a new or used Remington 700 .223. Seriously, why keep this thing?

I agree with the trade up suggested and I might add if your son is planning on hunting big game, like deer get at least a 243 caliber Remington 700.
(223 and big game is asking for some sad times ahead, usually after several hours of tracking and looking for small drips of blood and then seeing the buzzards circling on YOUR carcass few days later)
Hope you can accept the truth, some guys can't! I own several 223 rifles and they are great practice and varmit rifles, but WE no longer hunt big game with our 223's even though it's legal in several states with restrictions. Not that much difference in 243 and 223 recoil either.
We've been their with the experiences of the Handi rifles and keeping our leatherman on our hip and HANDI for removing a hull from a not so HANDI rifle.
