3lb. trigger vs. 1.5lb. trigger

Hi guys.

I recently installed a Timney trigger on my Mosin Nagant 91/30. It has a crisp, single stage, 3lb. trigger right out of the box. A world better than stock. I am considering adjusting it to 1.5lbs. and would have done it had I the tiny tools necessary on hand.

So I ask you guys, is it worth it to seek out the tools to adjust it to 1.5lbs.? As it stands this is probably the sweetest trigger on any of my rifles. What is the "sweet" weight according to you guys for a rifle trigger?

Personally I wouldn't mess with it. I couldn't imagine why you would need a 1.5' trigger, on a M-N for. A old military rifle with a hair trigger, is just asking for trouble, IMHO.

I have a Newton rifle with the nicest double set trigger system I have ever used. I am building it up as my offhand rifle. They will only fire practically from the set. They can be adjusted down to next to zero. Not really all that useful or safe at that level. With gloves on during the winter I run it a little stiffer than during the summer.

My S&W 29's break at about 3.25#. Most folks guess they are a 1/4 ounce to a 1/4 pound, but I can hang the pistol on the trigger.

You could try the lighter setting and if you don't like it turn it back up.

What is the reason for dropping the trigger pull to such a light weight? 3 lbs is a pretty low number for a milsurp, I must agree with Trap; if it is your best feeling trigger than leave it be.

The pull weight is only one, and probably the last, thing that makes a trigger "sweet"
Creep, the amount of movement before the sear releases, and over-travel, how far it moves after the sear releases, are the 2 things that most notice first/consider the most important.

That said, I run 2.75 lb on my Canjar (it used to be 3 lb, until it wore out and needed a rebuild). On my RUM Improved the factory trigger (CZ-550) came at 3 lb with the set trigger releasing at ~8oz

I had an 03A3 with an extremely light trigger pull. One day I was lining up on a very nice buck and my bulky cold weather glove set it off. Last time I hunted with a trigger under 3#.

IMO, unless you're shooting paper off a bench, anything less than 3lbs is more a liability than a benefit.

I wouldn't touch this either; 3lbs really is optimal for something like this. Less than that and you're increasing the odds for a negligent discharge with little to gain.

In this particular case, the trigger probably isn't the limiting factor in your accuracy anyway, so you're unlikely to see any real-world benefit.

My kind a crazy guy. Putting in a trigger that cost much as a whole rifle [:D].

Too bad the Nagant isn't a semi where you could let the recoil bounce off the trigger finger "bump fire" style.

My "sweet" little creep if any, low travel of the trigger movement before letting off. Sometimes a heavier but crisp break feels lighter than it really is.

As for your new trigger, I'd see if it gets lighter from use before trying to trick it out.

Consider this before you decide to lighten the trigger any more. You have a rifle that cocks on closing and has a very awkward safety that is applied after the rifle is ready to fire.

The safety on the mosin nagant is difficult to use as issued. I have seen photos of a "ring" welded to the rear of the safety like some of the Swiss rifles.

Even with your three pound trigger, the welded "ring" might be a sensible option to consider.

    Thanks guys.

I will shoot it as is and probably leave it like that. If I ever decide to tinker for no good reason as I tend to do, I will post the outcome. [:D]
