At the risk of sounding like an idiot: What exactly is a carbine? I know it's a light weight rifle, but is there a certain criteria (barrel length, etc.) that makes it a 'carbine'?-Marcus

Here's a definition for you from "Shooter's Bible Small Arms Lexicon and Concise Encyclopedia": Carbine: a short barrelled musket or rifle whose barrel is generally not longer than 22". It is characterized by its light weight and was primarily intended for use by cavalrymen. Its name is derived from the short rifled firearm carried by the French cavalrymen or "carbinieres."

From my understanding it was a rifle that shoots semi-auto ammo, like 9mm or .45But then again, there are the AR-15's that shoot the .223....
