Mossberg 500 won't lock up

If it was a bolt action rifle with some probability of shooting decent groups, I could fix it or at least give the guy an answer. He has a 500 Mossberg that when you slide the action forward won't lock up. What piece is broken? Do any of you all have the peice and what will it cost him to get it? Thanks, GHD

The problem you are describing is odd and unusual. The 500 is a very reliable, rugged shotgun and relatively simple internally. The bolt has a wide slot cut into it lengthwise and a part called the bolt lock is held inside the slot by a cross pin. The lock is not spring powered, but works by a camming surface cut into the bottom of the part that forces the bolt lock upward when the slide is moved forward. There is a lug or hump on top of the bolt lock part that is forced into a square cut at the rear of the barrel extension, and that is what causes the gun to lock closed. You can see this square cut if you open the action and turn the gun upside down and look into the rear of the barrel with a flashlight. Is something in the square cut area? If not, your problem may be that the cross pin has come out of the bolt/bolt lock, or that the gun has been used so much that the camming surfaces on the bolt lock have worn out--or the lug on the top has worn out. If so, your part can easily be obtained from the Gun Parts Corp. or other sources and is fairly inexpensive. Perhaps the gun only needs to be disassembled and given a good cleaning.

First of all, make sure it is unloaded and push the slide all the way forward. If the gun fires, it might have something to do with the slide release. (that little tab of metal next to the trigger guard) Take a look at it; is it out or in? There is a part in relation to the hammer inside the gun that forces the tab out or down as the gun is cocked. If that piece is broken or bent, there will not be pressure to move the release down. If it doesn't close all the way and does not fire, it might be assembled wrong, or really dirty.Roy
