Could you tell if a shotshell was a blank or if it was live?(for ww2 reenacting)

    From what I have observed,most of the time the blanks are not folded in a star crimp but rather held in with a hard card wad.So if the case has a folded end it was probably a live shell.If it is cut off neat then a blank.

    Another way to tell (although I wouldn't trust my life to it) is hold it up to a strong light. You should be able to see it's load sillohuete

    Try weighing the one you have and compare that to the weight of a hot load..should be a recognizable difference..

    Guys he was talking in the past tense rather than being able to weigh the shells while loaded.
