I just got a S&W Mod 52. For those of you who don't know, it shoots 38 Special mid range wadcutters only. This gun shoots like a dream. My question is on the model. I have seen reference to the 52, 52-1, and 52-2. Mine has a 52 a space then a 1 is there supposed to be a " - " before the 1? The serial number on my gun is 58###.Here is a link to a couple of pics. http://content.communities.msn.com/rballipics/shoebox.msnw?Page=Last Roy

YOU HAVE A 52-1 MODEL FYI 52 STARTED AT 50000 THRU 53500 (APPX) IN 1961 THE 52-1 STARTED PRODUCTION AROUND 1963. WOULD GUESS YOURS MADE ABOUT 1965-6. THE 52-2 STARTED AROUND 1971

Another way to tell - The 52 is DOUBLE ACTION, the change to 51-1, on May 13, 1963, was when it was made SINGLE ACTION, the change to the 52-2 in 1971 was when they incorporated the coil spring style extractor.
The second admendment GUARANTEES the other nine and the Constitution!

S&W Man is right, but it is important to note that Model 52 (no dash) pistols were shipped with the double action mechanism locked out by a screw. The screw can be removed and the pistol then operates just like any other S&W double action pistol. If you did not know the double action mechanism was there, you would think it was a single action mechanism. I base this observation on my very early (5000X) M52. Wow, what a pistol! The quality is superb, the trigger is excellent and the pistol is super accurate. The box and papers for my M52 got damaged. (The pistol was stored out of the box, thank goodness.) Anyone have replacements (must be M52 only)? [This message has been edited by JudgeColt (edited 03-16-2002).]

I happen to have four grip screws that are unique to the straight 52(not-1 or -2) for sale on Gunbroker.com auction These screws have no threads for a short distance below the screw head Check yours!!!!

As the 1979 retired owner of the FITZ pistol grip company I will next month be digging out of 22 years of storage some M52 olympic style grips with thumb rest and palm swell plate in Fitz duramite and Tropical Hardwoods. Email Paul "Fitz" saeco95687@yahoo.com
