Winchester Model 69A

I am going to place a Win Model 69A for sale. But before I do, I need to make sure that i have correctly Identified the model as the TARGET MODEL. From my books, there was three models of the 69A (Standard, Match, and Target). If anyone can tell me how to correctly determine which model I have, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

The standard had a slot milled in the barrel for a rear sight. The target and match didn't. The target model had a series 75 front sight and a series 80 receiver peep sight. The match, a series 57 Lyman receiver sight with a series 75 front sight. Also, both of the latter had 1&1/4" leather slings and a greater drop in the stock. See page 504, The Winchester Book, by George Midas.

Thanks Talon, I will try to get a copy of George's book. Can you tell me why some have chrome bolt and trigger guard while most have the blued? This one has the chrome and from your description is definately not the standard. I will endeavor to find out which lyman sights this rifle has.

Chrome? Mr Midas doesn't mention Chrome. He states that all medal parts were blued, except the bolt, and it was just polished. However, this may not be definitive as he only brefly adresses the Winchester 22s. I do know Winchester was continully modifing each model of their 22s, and there are other books out on the .22s that I don't have with me now. And, I do know that some bolts were transferable amoung the models, but I don't know if the 69 series was involved. Perhaps another expert can clairify.

During the last two years of production bolts and trigger guards were chromed on the regular 69's but not necessarily the target models. I have a target model that I got for Christmas in 1961 and it's all blued. It has the Lyman 57 sight and a grooved receiver. (I wanted a 62 but my dad was a target nut)!

Thanks for the help. I learned today from a gunsmith that I do have a Match model of the 69A. This coincides with the story that I was told from the original owner. But I just wanted to be sure before I posted it on the auction.The local gunsmith too believed that the chrome was a late addition of Winchester. He did the same analysis as Talon, that the the standard had a slot milled in the barrel for a rear sight, which this doesn't. He also believed that the target and match model had significant differences in the sights, but was unable to tell me which for the later made 69s. He believed that since this gun has the rear Lyman peep sight and the hooded peep for the font sight that this was a Match model. As well as the fact that the gun has a sling and swivels consistent with the match rifles of the 1960s. Furthermore he also thought the 69A target model didn't come with a sling just swivels. If any one knows more I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. I would just like to be accurate with my reporting when I put it up for auction. Thanks again for your help.

I have the same problem that you do RIGS. I have a model 69A that has chrome trigger guard and bolt handle. It has to be a target model though because it has a reciever that is cut and factory tapped for a win 80A reciever sight and 80A sights was acompanied with a 97B front hooded sight. By 1 of my books it clearly states that target rifles had a non-tapered barrel, and my 69A has a tapered barrel. I am a pre-64 winchester lover but am confused in the specifics in 69's. I have a spare stock that is shorter than the 1 on the gun and is lighter. The stock on my 69A has been factory cut out to accept the 80A reciever sight.Is my rifle a Target or a match. Any help is appreciated.
