Specific Primers

I'm new to reloading, and want to know if it is safe to use a different brand primer from what is listed in a reloading manual. (Assuming same size, small pistol etc and NOT using magnum rather than regular primers). For example if a load calls for Federal primers, would it be safe to substitue CCI primers, or will this change the pressures/velocities involved?

There could be a small difference, but yes, it is safe.

Heck, I reduced all my loads and went exclusively with magnum primers. Of course I worked my way back up.
