Hk 91 vs. clones

Planning on buying a used but in excellent condition Hk91 from a friend. This comes with one 20 rnd. mag., one 30 rnd. mag, a cheap scope, and a sling which he wants for $1,000.00. He tells me that all are original Hk parts except for the receiver which is made by Federal Arms. How could I tell the diffrence between an authentic 91 vs. a clone???Are there any markings at all that would tell me that this riffle is the real deal??? (In exception of the receiver of course)I'm new to gun collecting and this would be my first riffle purchase if ever. I trust the guy and all but don't wanna pay $$$ for a used clone that's only worth $500-$650.00.Please HELP!!! All inputs and info. are greatly welcomed and appreciated.Thanks,Hkfan33 [This message has been edited by Hk33 (edited 03-25-2002).]

Tell your friend to keep it. I recently bought one of an auction site and was so disappointed when I went to pick it up at my local dealer, that I told the dealer to box it back up and send it back. The Federal arms HK-91 clone isn't worth the supposed HK parts that they are " built" with. I examined another at another shop and couldn't find any HK parts. Many are advertised as being built with HK parts, but don't beleive it, because I didn't find any. The rifle sells "new" for around $400. 20 rd original HK mags can be had for as little as $10-15.In short, you ain't getting any "deal." IMHO...

Since it has a Fed Ord receiver instead ofHK, the gun in question IS a clone.

A quick update on the HK 91 vs. clones post...My friend e-mailed me yesterday w/ some info. re. the 91. This is what I gathered:He admitted that the riffle was a clone and NOT the "Real Deal" that's why he's selling it to me for a thousand and not for $2,000.00-$3,000.00.Next, I need to make a CORRECTION on the Federal Arms that I thought was stamped on the receiver, receiver is stamped w/ Federal and NOT Federal Arms.He continues to tell me that he bought this riffle when they first came out w/ them and the serial # is 2xxx which means it's from an early batch of riffles made by Federal. He also tells me that this is one of the first companies that Hk authorized to make these riffles and a few years later...other companies started coming out w/ them. Now is this riffle now worth the $$$ is asking for or is this riffle still considered a Federal Arms clone???All insights and inputs are still very much welcomed. Thanks again,Hk33

HK did not " authorize" anybody to produce these clones that are now on the market. The only people that HK authorized to produce G-3's ( HK-91's in military form), were those made under license agreement with Greece and Portugal. The best advice that I can give you would be to stay FAR away from this particular rifle. Don't be lulled into the " Federal" name, it is in no way related to the fine ammo company by the same name. Take your 800-1000 bucks and buy any one of the fine ar-15 rifles by Colt, Armalite or Bushmaster. You really can't go wrong with any of those choices. Ammo is cheaper than the 7.62 and parts are abundant. E-mail me if I can help you any further, it would be my pleasure....barryfox@hotmail.com
