A friend of mine has a single shot, breech action .44 caliber shotgun that we are trying to find out about. The following is the information found on the barrel of the shotgun: X.L. Shotgun 44 Cal. O.F. Pat'd June 23 1885 No other information can be found. No serial number or Manufacturer's location. The shotgun is in very good condition and works.I would appreciate any help anyone can give me to identify this shotgun. Thank you.

The .44 cal shotgun was something of a predecessor of the .410. I have seen at least one rechambered for .410. It looked like all that was done was lengthen the chamber. The .44 was shorter than even the 2 1/2" .410.

I have one of these that is oviously a Hopkins and Allen chambered for (but not marked) the .44 Extra Long Shot-shell. I also had a Marbles Game Getter for the same. I shot .44-40 Winchester cases loaded with Speer plastic shot capsules. Make a chamber cast if in doubt.
