We recently cleaned out my deceased grandparents' home and held an auction, selling almost everything. One item I held aside was a Colt handgun. I don't know much about handguns and was wondering if someone could help me out.

The gun is a Colt .22lr semi-auto and it says "Match Target" on the side. The serial number is 125585-S. The gun has plastic grips and one magazine. No box or manual.

How do I know how much it is worth? What do I look for when judging the condition of the gun?

First thing you need to do is take that old, worthless gun down to the post office and mail it to me.Since I doubt that you will follow the first recommendation, try this link: http://www.colt22.com/armay53.html Hope it helps,Frank

Win37's answer assumes the inquiry is about a Colt Match Target .22 pistol, rather than a Colt Match Target .223 rifle of the AR-15 type. I would also assume the inquiry is about the pistol and not the rifle, but, if that is not correct, there are many sites that deal with the AR-15/M-16.Win37, were did you find such a neat site to have reprints of old American Rifleman articles?

Thanks win37. Sometimes the most obvious answer is overlooked. I wonder who put that information on some site somewhere? Neat. Thanks again.
