Is there any harm in finishing my Box type Calls with a Varnish or Shellac finish?Maybe Linseed or; what might look nice?

I wouldn't use any of the oils, the chaulk will gum up and the tone will be severly changed. As for the hard finishes it may change the sound a slight bit so try to find a finish that can be sprayed on very lightly! Use very sparingly! Possibly the shellac, I'd stay away from the varathanes, I believe they may be to heavy and change the tone. I have used the flat black and just barely dusted them before, with very slight tone changes. The only good a finish will do is make them look pretty.

I just read an article where the author had Ray Eye tune up his call. Eye says to finish the outside only to try and waterproof. Do not put a finish on the contact side of the lid or the edge of the sounding board.KC
