This is my great-grandfathers rifle. Says model 1897, serial #400881 (also a "D") on top of this. End of gun says "Winchester repeating arms". Anyone have a rough idea what it is worth ? The wood parts are all good shape, and the metal is just a little tarnished.........

If it's a 12 gauge, and a 'standard grade', it's worth somewhere between $275-375. The "Blue Book" may be in disagreement, but lately these models have come up, price-wise. Of course, no one would sell or trade his grand daddy's gun. It most probably fed the family during the 30s.
