Ive seen several, but not one functioned correctly. Not to say none work, Im sure someone has had a good experience with the conversion.

    Good Luck.

For the amount of money one spends on a conversion, you are halfway towards getting a .22 or maybe a Beeman P1 air pistol which has a 45 size grip and a bit of recoil. I like the idea of the conversions, but I think there's something lost when you aren't shooting a gun in the manner in which it was designed. I'd be willing to start a shooter on a 22 conversion and move them up to a 45 when they were ready, but I'd steer someone towards a real tack driver if they wanted a 22 to supplement their 45.

Best is the Marvel unit - if the Kart is as good as the Marvel, why don't we see a lot more of them on the line at Camp Perry? The Marvel functions right and the accuracy is excellent. Read about them here

I have a Jarvis .22 conversion that works well for me. It is all steel and uses Colt Ace magazines. I use it on a Kimber Classic Target frame.

I'm surprised No One said Colt! They are out there.....pricey, yes! But they work, are dead accurate, and hold their value. Most of the "JUNK" kits out there now are alloy, don't hold the slide open after the last round, and simply are not accurate and don't hold their value. Look at what you can buy a Ceiner for! Don't know anyone with a Ceiner that says much about it. Ho Hum! The Colt is simply the top end off a Service Model ACE with all its internal parts including the famous floating chamber. Want a Good one, get one of these! Shoot one on my 70 Series Gold Cup and have one for my Combat Elite 80 Series. Both work fantastic and are cheap for a day's worth of plinking, training, target shooting compared to .45 ammo! My Opinion!

KART - PROBLEM - HAVE NOT BEEN MADE FOR YEARS DUE TO LAWSUIT. SEE IF TOP PERRY SHOOTERS ARE SHOOTING KART BARRELS IN CF AND .45. ALSO, THEY HAVE GONE FROM "SHOOTERS" TO "COLLECTOR" STATUS. MARVEL IS GOOD AND AVAILABLE. OLDER COLT WITH FLOATING CHAMBER ARE MOVING INTO COLLECTOR STATUS, ARE PRICEY, AND LESS THAN MATCH GRADE, BUT FUN TO SHOOT.

I have a Service Model Ace in new condition and had a Colt conversion unit I used on my 1918 1911, rarely shot out a full magazine without a hangup of some kind. Have had Colt Challenger, Colt .22, an old Walther and a High Standard, none of which gave a malfunction that I recall. I think the Colt floating chamber design in the Ace and its conversion counterpart leave something to be desired. Robert

Keep your 45 a 45 and find one of the old High Standards for your 22 shooting.I've had several conversions and not one of them shot as well as needed.Save your money, isn't going to happen.modoc

    "Best" for what?

Kart and Marvel are target-grade conversions. If that is what is desired, then they are better than the others mentioned.

If a plinking piece is desired, then the current Ciener kits are fine.

Being a Colt collector, I naturally favor the early factory conversions. (The Ace II was made by Ciener, and pales next to the real Colt units for quality.) Some are very accurate, most are not target grade. Most work flawlessly, some do not. Those that do not work well may work better with a different kind of ammunition. Some malfunctions could be due to mixing up the recoil springs. Lubrication is important.

Cheap ammunition with bare lead bullets will tend to lead up the floating chamber to where the chamber ceases to "float." Something like Militec will keep the chamber free through a lot of shooting. Use ammunition with copper-washed bullets and the leading will be minor. Magazines are expensive, but very reliable. There is a beautiful boxed Colt kit on eBay right now at about $350 with time still to run.

The suggestions to buy a target pistol do not answer the question. If the person wanted a separate target pistol, the question would not be asked. I find a certain draw to being able to shoot my early Gold Cup with a .22 conversion kit on it. Same wonderful trigger and feel. Great fun. I can certainly understand the desire for a conversion kit.
