Best .308 for a 26"/1:10 barrel?

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but the aforementioned Savage 12FV is the first actual accuracy-minded .308 I've ever owned. The G3 and the Vepr don't count as accuracy minded (heh).

Thus, I've never had any need to buy .308/7.62 that's worth a damn.

Seeing as how it's got a 26" bbl with a 1:10 twist, can I get some suggestions on commercial ammo? I realize the first suggestion for ultimate rifle-specific accuracy would be "handload", but unfortunately (for several reasons) that's not an option right now.

And I also realize I'm going to want to try a few different brands to see what it likes the best. But I'd rather not waste my time and money on stuff which is inaccurate/poorly made/too heavy/too light/not right in some other way.

Ideas?

    Black Hills 175 gr match.
That is the closest thing you can buy to what I and the guy I shoot F-class with handload.

Ditto what Hawke Carse said. Any of the Black Hills match ammo is excellent, as well as the Federal Gold Match with Sierra Match bullets. Winchester Supreme Match is also generally good.
Your 1-10" twist barrel is good for anything from light weight bullets through well over 200 grain bullets, depending on the length of the bullet and somewhat your velocity.
    Good Luck.............................

gold medal, blk hills, also try a company that make reload with ballistic tips for a cheap, pretty accurate load that is good for hunting too

    Bullzeye,

+3 on the Black Hills. Also, my own order of preference is Hornady, BH, Federal, and Remington Match grade. A box of 20 will run from $17-25 in those categories. Hornady makes it in both A-max match and BTSP match. You can find all of the above at Graf's http://www.grafs.com/fc/browse.php?o=3&p=232&q=&v=&s=

The next best thing I can suggest is to have some custom loaded for you. There are several people who do this and can load it to your specs. Sometimes at the range where you shoot you will find someone who is doing a small reloading business on the side. My personal opinion is in order to do it right and get the most accuracy out of your rifle you need to get someone local so that you can spec the ammo to the rifle. -good luck

It seems that the general consensus says Black Hills Match anything. For the 1 in 10 twist i would stay above 150 grain loadings. Black Hills is the preferred choice of many who who want accuracy without hand loading. I would try other loadings that use hornady v-max, a-max, or any nosler ballistic tip as well. This stands for any caliber, not just the .308. Those polyomer tipped bullets just seem to have an edge. Let us know what you come up with, and how it shoots.

    Just to be different... :)

A local shop has a lot (almost full case) of Lake City match 308/7.62 nato. I've got a few boxes he gave me, and he's got the rest of the case (or had it earlier this week). If you are interested, let me know and I'll either put my 3 boxes up as an auction lot for you or I'll get him to list a few boxes as a package deal.
