Help refinishing a gun

Hi folks. Here's the deal. I have a crappy gun that I would like to refinish. Specifically, the gun is a Schmidt Ostheim / Rhoen 22 (Walker international Model 21). Cheap * gun. But it has sentimental value, and I need to refinish it as to protect it from rust.

Here's the problem. 50% of the gun is cast with some sort of zinc alloy from what I understand. The barrel, cylinder, and a few other miscellaneous parts appear to be steel. I had my heart set on rebluing, really just as a neat little cheap side product. But from what I gather the cast pieces cannot be blued.

So my question is, how can I refinish a cheap $40 (conservatively) gun. Should I paint it? Blue it? Please help.
