6 mm A I

I'm wondering what the qualified opinion of rechambering a Rem 600/660, in 6 mm to the Ack. Imp. version. In this case I'm using the factory 20" Bbl. I have done this in the past by rebarreling with a new 24" Bbl. Most of the reloading manuals use a 24" Bbl. for their testing, and publishing. I would estimate that the 20" Bbl. loses around 2-300 fps compared to the 24". What might I expect to gain by going to the AI chamber, in terms of velocity. THX

I think you kind of answered your own question, of the performance. The 20" barrel, does not effectively use the powder capacity of the standard 6mm Remington. The only gain you will be making, is reducing case stretching.

+1!
Not to mention I have a 6mm AI throated only to take 105-108 gr. pills (actual throating is for the Sierra 107 SMK). What a PITA when you get it out of it's comfort zone. It does great with 105 VLD's, 107 SMK's and 108 gr. VLD's(BT Matches too). But feed it 115's and I blow primers no matter what I do with it.
The one thing the rifle really has in it's favor is the long barrel. No way would I go with a short barrel. Too much velocity lost, and too much blast if you try to push a faster powder to get your velocity from it.
On the other hand, best thing you could do is stick a long barrel in 6mm/6mm Improved on there.
