I have a early first generation 7 1/2" barrel. It is marked under the ejector housing with the number "732". Also under the ejector pin with a sideways "44".
Here's my problem, a 44-40 slops around in the muzzle end and a 45 long colt won't fit in the muzzle.
I had a gunsmith slug it and it's .450 across the grooves.
Could this be a 44 Henry ( rimfire )

I have a 4 3/4" .357 Magnum Colt SAA barrel, fits 1st & 2nd generation Colts. It has a one line address on the top, and the Colt Single Action Army .357 marking on the right side of the barrel above the ejector housing. The caliber marking is usually on the left side. There are no other markings. Any idea why the marking would be on the right side.

It's be 45 cal. then. 45 caliber pistol bullets are .451, or .452, depending on maker.

Well, no. First Generation SAA .45 Colt barrels are supposed to be .454 or so; some may be larger.

I don't know about black powder handguns? But BP cartridge military rifles, of that era. Are commonly encountered with oversized land and groove dimensions. This is to try to compensate for the heavy BP fouling, caused by rapid firing during a military battle. Think about what happened to Custer, at the Little Big Horn.

The almost pure lead bullets used during that time frame. Were designed to "slug up" to bore size, when the BP charge ignited. This was meant to compensate for their undersize bullets.

The 732 should be part of the serial number of the pistol it should also have the same serial number with all numbers on the Frame the trigger guard and the grip frame. There will also be a short number on the Cylinder loading gate seen when you open it. This is a ASSEMBLER number and should match a number on the frame visible only after removing trigger guard. If the barrel is numbered I suspect If all the number match the cylinder may have the same number 732 on it also
