Hi - Point 9mm OR Ruger P-89

I want to buy a 9mm semi auto just to plink around on the weekends with. I can pick up a Ruger p89 for $339 or I can pick up a Hi Point for $80. I am not looking for long term investments, winning any shooting matches, or must have self defense just a toy to shoot on weekends. My 10 year old daughter also will be shooting whatever I buy. So I guess my question is should I spend $250 more for the Ruger or use that money to buy ammo for the Hi point thank you all for your opinions

If it was me, spend the extra money and have some thing you can pass down to your child. You get what you pay for and with the ruger you can get it fixed if it breaks, the hy point if it breaks will just be a $80 paper weight.

Ya can't go wrong with a Ruger. Spend the extra bucks and you'll not be disappointed.

If looking for a bargain then buy a used Ruger. It will hold a good value and last a lifetime.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

I would never buy a Hi Point. If you are looking at just plinking why a 9mm. Have you looked at Taurus? My 2 cents

LIKTOSHOOT said it best ... Ask anyone who has ever had to deal with Ruger for warrenty ... They (Ruger) is the best in the business when it comes to prompt and proficent repairs ... they stand behind their warranty 100%, 100% of the time, usually with no questions asked!

Thank you everyone for your input. I will definetly buy the ruger, I was thinking that all along but $250 was awefully tempting. I appreciate everyones time and input. Thanks again

Just for info, read in Gun Tests magazine that they rate the Hi-Point 995 over the Ruger PC9. Don't think this pertains to the original question but the word Hi-Point just made me remember the article.

Remember the movie "Tommy Boy". Anybody can you-know-what in a box and slap a warantee on it. There are those that would do so in order to sell something so long as it is profitable.

The Gun Test mag artical was impressive, and you ar hearing from a guy that has Ruger AC556, Mini 14, KP89, and two 10/22's. I'm no Hi Point salesman, but as I said the artical was interesting.

I loved the one on use the 250 to buy all of the 9mm ammo, I would love to see the day a Hi-Point fired that many rounds! Had a couple of them, not sure what Gun Test said, but I had a couple of those, one new had the firing pin break with less than 50 rounds! If I had not won that on a raffle I would have been really upset, but at least I got my $1.'s worth. Go with the Ruger, just adding my 2 cents, did I mention those were about the bulkiest firearm out there, or how heavy they were, how about that superb sighting system, or here is a good one resale value, be lucky to trade even for a morning paper! Other than that....

I Have sold around 35 Hi-points for plinking in the last year. We have had only 2 come back. The folks at Hi-point have been great.$100.00 for an American product with alifetime warrenty. how can you go wrong. Lookout guys your snobbery is showing.

Here's a fresh thought and what I would do. I am seeing ads for arsenal refinished Browning High Powers MADE IN BELGIUM for the $300 range. This would give you 1. a reliable shooter 2. an instant collectable 3. retains its value 4. availability of high cap magazines 5. a good choice in a defensive pistol if your needs ever change and you require one. In a similar vein is the Makarov in 9x18 which gives you many of the above advantages and cheap ammo you can shoot all day. I own 2 Makarovs and love shooting them, basically a PPK and with increasing aftermarket goodies like rubber grips and personal defense ammo. Now there is 2 cents for ya! Ed

If your daughter will be shooting it then i would definatly say get the p89, for 2 reasons......1.) much better quality2.) safer (its the difference between bungy jumping with a new bungy cord, and jumping with frayed twine)
