Howdy! AK-47 Info? How often do you clean your guns?

Hi Folks, Been lurking here for some time, thought I'd ask a couple questions. I've always had rifles and shotguns, but am recently getting into handguns. I don't shoot my long guns that often, but I've been shooting my pistols a couple times a week. Should I clean them every single time? I've had a couple people tell me that it is excessive.Another question: I'm looking at these AK-47s from Romania that are all over the place. Are they decent? Worth the $300? I'd just use them to plink/goof with.I know *nothing* about assualt type stuff....is there anywhere online that tells the do's and don'ts? I don't want to go to prison for putting the wrong parts on, or something! (Damned feds! Why do they have to make it SO HARD?)Anyway, thanks for your help, I really enjoy the forums!Mercury

The USMC taught me to clean my guns after each use. A practice that contuinues until today. I think every 5000 round would be sufficient, but I I just can't let the sun go down without cleaning them.

I was not in the military, but same for me. Cleaning 'em is just a part of shooting 'em to me.

Merc...-- I clean my guns after every use, like stated above, its just part of shooting them.-- The Romanian AKs are very much worth the $300 as long as you get the SAR-1 with the double stack mags in 7.62x39... There are SAR-2s in 7.62x54 (ammo is harder to find) and SAR-3 in .223 (mags are hard to find).SAR-1s are great for plinging, use VERY cheap ammo if you buy offline and get wolf ammo. I LOVE mine! however, be warned. Since they were made for export to the US, every once in a while people get a bad one(front sight is rotated 5-6 degrees either way on the barrell, broken piston rod). It doesn't happen very often but still. just keep you eye out and ask questions.-- as far as assult rifles go, if you don't add anything then your fine. If you do decide to add something then you must look at your weapon very closely....if it has....2 of the following...pistol gripfolding/telescopic stockflash hiderdeteatchable magazinebayonut lutgreanade launcher... then you cannot add anything to the rifle. for example.....the AK has a pistol grip and a detachable magazine, therefore it cannot be modified further. a stock mini-14 has just a detachable magazine. so you could add a flash hider, bayo lug, pistol grip stock(as long as it doesnt fold)...hope this helpsKaddy

The SAR-2s are 5.45x39. Ammo is relatively plentiful (via mail order and some at gunshows). But you will pay a little bit more than the 7.62x39.

I clean my AK and AR if I fire more than 100 rounds or so, if it's less than a 100, a quick pass with a couple of patches down the barrel, a wipe down of the bolt and reciever interior.Decide upon what you want, a MAK-90 with the "thumbhole" stock or a more traditional varient, such as the SAR-1,2,or 3. Look long and hard, don't limit your sources, visit all the local pawn dealers as well as the gunshops....find out if any of them will give you a break on the gun, on your 1st case of ammo or some spare mags. Work that deal!! The same goes for sellers on GB. Generally, I have found it easier and cheaper to purchase ammo at the gunstore/sporting good stores, although recently there was a guy who was selling 1000 round cases of Wolf 7.62X39 for $89.00, shipping included! As is pointed out previously, be very aware that there are versions of the AK made in (Romainia??) that are called the WASR-10 version and they ONLY accept single stack mags of 10 rounds. Mine is an SAR-1 version I got from a user here on GB, that combined with the 75 round drum I also got here makes me VERY happy.

Thanks for all the info, it is appreciated. I just *may* pick up that AK.....looks like a cheap plinker, and something "neat" to have at the same time. I like having oddball stuff........ .50 calibers look like something I "need"Hehehe....
