A friend showed me some ammo he got from his brother-in-law, and asked if I knew what they were for. I have no idea. They are as long as my little finger ( about 2"-2 1/4") with a red tip, and 88 LC around the primer. Looks like a small caliber rifle round.

Okay, I'll take a stab at it-How about USGI 5.56 tracers manufactured at Lake City arsenal in '88? Brth729-Nope, I'm not from Longview, but I know a few. Would you happen to know an LEO there whose given name is Tex?

TxsFrom the size they are I was thinking something along the lines of a 22-250, but it was the coloring on the tips that threw me off. No, I don't know him. I lived there several years back. Moved for job reasons to Illinois in '92. How long has he been there?[This message has been edited by Brth729 (edited 04-04-2002).]

Some mfg were creating balistic tip hunting rounds. I have seen blue, green, orange, and a few others. They were plastic tipped. It could be that. They came in multiple hunting caliburs. If it were a military round ie 7.62 or 5.56 then I would say tracer or armor piercing or some other military designation.

i would have to agree with TXS. lake city arsenal, tracer 223 or 5.56, whichever you prefer.

gap1916These aren't plastic tipped. These have a painted tip that comes about a 1/4" back from the tip.

The red painted tip means tracer. The LC 88 means Lake City Aresenal 1988. They do not make commercial ammo with that head stamp. It IS military. from size description it is probably 7.62 NATO Tracers. little bit long for 5.56.
The second admendment GUARANTEES the other nine and the Constitution!

I don't have the specs in front of me, but the overall length of USGI 5.56 rounds is right close to 2 1/4 inch. USGI .308 rounds are more like 2 3/4 to 3 inch.
