Thoughts on Vaquero

Like most of you all I too believe a man should only shoot/carry a caliber he can handle. My practical limit is any stout load in .357 mag. My question is should I step up to the .44 mag since I'm contemplating hog hunting. I'm not particularly recoil sensitive and I know that much practice is in order to ensure a clean kill. But, is it necessary, or will the .357 do the job? Any recomendations on loads for either is appreciated. Thanks

Yes a 357 will do it,but a 44 will do it better.If you knock one down and it gets up and stumbles off into thick cover you will feel much better about following it with a 44.Better yet a 12 gauge with buckshot.

A .357 is good--and probably good enough with the proper loads. Mine is in .44-40 Win. and I like it a lot. Another alternative, short of .44 Mag.

If you or a friend reload go with the 44. You don't have to run it at full throttle.

I have found several times that a 357 mag can be light on the big boars. Preferable is the 44 mag with a silhoutte load. This allows penetration to the vitals.

One thing you might consider is the .357 with 180 gr. ammo. I have a .357 carbine and the 180 gr. bullets from it are really lethal!

Try the Bisley Vaquero in 44Mag. The grip shape of the Bisley really takes alot of the bite out of the 44MAG. I used to own regular Vaqueros until I shot my buddies Bisley and I was hooked.
