scope for a 10/22

Any suggestions for the max scope you would put on a Ruger 10/22? Maybe a lighted reticle? I plan on spending about 200 on the gun, and that or less on the scope.

Think about a red dot scope. BSA makes a nice 30mm Red Dot sight for about $30.No magnification, but it's great for fast target acquisition if you go varmint hunting, and your son will undoubtedly find it really cool.

I have a BSA Catseye Illuminated 3-10x44 on one of my 10/22's that I like a lot. Natchezss.com has 'em for about $95, the non-illuminated for about $89. I was really surprised by the clarity of this scope for the price.

I don't know the age of your son...or his shooting experience. But if he is new to shooting, i.e. this is his first rifle, consider giving him the rifle without a scope. Let him get used to shooting it for a year with open sights, then for his next birthday get the scope.I respectfully say that very often we give our kids the guns we would like to have, and not necessarily the ones that are best for them.

I agree with the open sites. I started that way with my dad, then in high school shot on the rifle team. Glad I started with open sites. I never hunted with a scope till I was about 18 and my eyes started getting to bad. Just a cool side note. Last year the school sold the rifle teams guns. They had been in storage for 15 years. I had the high bid and got them all. Now I own the Anschutz 1407 I shot 20 years ago in school.

Rafter, good question. Second gun for him, he will be 11 years old. (third if you include an air rifle CO-2 type) His first .22 was mine from when I was about 12. Winchester .22 bolt action, and a cheap scope. I do also like that gun (10/22), I admit, my son and I share a lot of the same tastes, much to my wife's despair...The trick is to point out that $8000.00 ATV that we also want, and I get the gun every time. Thanks everybody for all the input.
