REM 1100 QUESTION

edited April 2002 in Ask the Experts
I have a Rem mod 1100 12 ga. with a fixed vent rib barrel ( full) the barrel is marked 2 3/4 only, so thats what I feed it. My question is: can I get a different barrel and shoot 3 in shells? I'd like to do some turkey hunting with it this year, and would feel better with a little more range as I am new to it. BTW its an older gun. Thanks for the help - Ralph

Reb, a 3" barrel will do you no good unless its on a 3" magnum receiver, unless you want to use it as a single shot.

Two points:1)The ejection port won't be large enought to eject the hulls properly.2)Remington barrels are EXPENSIVE. You would be dollars ahead to just buy a used or even new Mossberg.I will say though that 3" Winchester XX #4 turkey loads work though. We've killed three birds this week with them. It's 2 full ounces of shot!

hey,reb I HAVE AN OLDER 1100 2 3/4 INCHREMINGTON MAKES A 3INCH STEEL SHOT BARREL THAT I HAVE BEEN USEING FOR YEARS ,IT HAS NO PROBLEM EJECTING SHELLS BUT IT SAYS STEEL SHOT ONLY .I DONT KNOW WHY PEOPLE POST REPLYS WHEN THEY HAVE NO CLUE.I HAVE SHOT LEAD 3INCH BUT WOULD NOT MAKE A HABIT OF IT. FOR TURKEY I WOULD USE I WOULD USE A SHEEL SUB LIKE BIZMUTH OR TUNGSTIN-POLY-3INCH 6S

Hey rrfhunter.... You must be talking about a mossberg...The ejection ports are the same size on the 1100..2-3/4" and the 1100.. 3" magnum guns...A 3" empty will not eject from a 2-3/4" Barrel, because of the location of the ejector... also it is not wise and is un safe to use 3' shells in the 2-3/4" barrel since the chamber is not long enough.... Although Remington recommends it NOT be done ..and far be it for me to disagree with the Mfg..... barrels with 3" chambers have been known to be put on "non-magnum receivers, and fired with no detremental consequences...Please note that I am not advising or condoning this practice....[This message has been edited by JIM STARK (edited 04-08-2002).]

I AGREE WITH JIM, I HAVE USED 3" BARRELS ON 2 3/4" RECEIVERS MANY TIMES (SEVERAL GUNS). THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS THE LENGHT OF THE CHAMBER AND THE LOCATION OF THE EJECTOR (AND THE FACT THAT THE 3" BARRELS ONLY HAVE ONE GAS PORT).

Well frankly I haven't tried switching barrels on my 1100. On my 870's it has been a problem. They eject but they tend to catch on the way out. Besides, I still stand by my advice in spite of rude replies (ie:nelchris)for the $110+ a used 1100 barrel costs, a guy might as well go buy a used Mossberg and own two guns. Then you won't feel bad putting camo all over it to cover the high gloss 1100 finish.BTW: Nelchris as to expertise, how many Turkeys did you kill this week? Probably watched a lot of video's, huh? I speak from real life experience, day in-day out.

WHOAAA GUYS!!! I have a Mag model 1100 in 20ga. That is made to shoot 3" shells. IT has a STEEL receiver. I think the regular 1100's had alloy or thin wall receivers. Better think twice about trying to shoot 3"mags! Also the gas ports are different on a Mag barrel. I shoot 2 3/4"s but have to change out the barrels to make it function correctly. GOOD LUCK! ...Mark(11echo)

You can find barrels much cheaper than noted. Try the auction sites.

I have a Remington 1100 MAGNUM 30" full choke, ventilated rib barrel that I bought twenty years ago. It shoots 3" magnums and 2 3/4" hi-brass. I have also used it at "block shoots" with low brass shells one at a time unloading them buy hand (will not eject by themselves). You DO NOT want anything hanging up in that barrel. When shooting low brass I always check the barrel and make sure the wad came out. (Block shoots you only shoot about once every half hour)

Hey- Thanks to all who replied. I was at a loss with this one. I think I'll stick to feeding my old 1100 2 3/4 shells for now. It'll just have to work, if'n the birds hang up out a little far because of my lack of expierence then I think I'll borrow another gun for this ( my first) season.Again, thanks for the help -Ralph
